Eligibility and Guidelines 

Teamsters Local 61 is honored to provide two (2) $500 scholarships to 2024 high school seniors who are the dependents of the Local Union's members. 

Applicants for the scholarship must use the application forms provided by Local 61. These may be obtained from your steward or at the Local Union office. 

Guidelines for this scholarship program are as follows: 

Eligibility. Applicants must be 2023 high school seniors who are dependent children or stepchildren, both natural and adopted, of Local 61 members who have been in good standing with the Local Union for at least one (1) year. Children of deceased or retired members also may apply. The children of Local 61's full-time business agents, organizers and office staff are NOT eligible to participate in the program. Application: Each applicant must provide Teamsters Local 61 with the following material

1. Applicants should request the guidance counselors send his or her high school transcript directly to Teamsters Local 61 Scholarship Program, 45 Sardis Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

2. Three (3) recommendations from persons such as teacher, advisor, coach, pastor, neighbor, or possibly an employer for whom applicants have performed part-time or summer work. These may be sent to the Local Union either by the applicant or by the person providing the recommendation.

3. A written statement from the applicant outlining his or her qualifications, ambitions, reasons for seeking higher education, plans for the future and intended area of study.

A letter of acknowledgment will be sent to each eligible applicant once it is determined that the Teamster parent is a member in good standing with Local 61. 

The applications of all eligible participants will be given to a committee of professors from several universities/colleges within the jurisdiction of Local 61. This committee will review the material and select two (2) scholarship winners.

Applications and all supporting materials must be received by Teamsters Local 61 no later than April 30th, 2023

Seniors may also apply to the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund online at http://www.jrhmsf.org/ Those applications are due March 1st, 2023
